Book Sewing by Heart: For the love of fabrics (Tilda) Review :

I didn't realize there was a new Tilda book that came out. I had read that the newest one was not going to have anything new in it, just older patterns republished, but that is not the case with this book. 5 fabric collections were used to make the quilts and softies: Bumblebee, Harvest, Circus, Cottage, and Cabbage Rose. I saw the promotional material for the Bumblebee fabrics and fell in love with the little beehive pincushions, they are in here, with a cute little bee softie but not the absolutely adoreable "Sweetheart Bumblebee Doll" pattern. I have searched high and low for that, it apparantly was sold only as a kit, hence I took away 1 star as that seems rather unfair. Also, you are supposed to be able to download the patterns for this book at a website mentioned in the book, but they were not there (that would have made life easier as the patterns in the book, while full size, overlap so tracing is a bit more challenging. The photography alone is just stunning even if you never make one project from the book, everything is so beautifully made and photographed, its just pure pleasure looking through the pages on a quite afternoon of relaxation. In the intro to the book you see 7 gorgeous quilts all hanging on a wall and while they were made using the 5 different fabric collections, they all truly match, with aquas of various tones, reds/pinks, blues, and small bits of green and golden yellow. The quilt patterns are fairly simple (one does require curved piecing), however, no in depth how to instructions on how to make them (just the basics) so it might be a bit overwhelming for a new quilter but don't let that stop you from getting this book, these quilts are very doable once you master the basics of quilting. They are all quilted with a beautiful meandering pattern. I wish these fabrics were easier to get ahold of in the US. There is one mention for a supplier in the US at the back of the book but they are a wholesale distributor. I've seen some listings on Etsy but I wouldn't advise buying any fabric that has been out for longer than 6 months from an Etsy shop because you don't know how the fabric is being stored (I've had a few bad experiencing purchasing fabric that had been stored for a few years from Etsy shops). The book seems to follow the seasons of the year beginning with the spring (with the Bumblebee fabric collection) that includes a quilt, matching pillow, bees, the beehives, more floral quilts/applique pillows; then it moves onto Fall with a pumpkin quilt and pumpkin softies, and ends with winter with a new Santa and some quilted stockings. Oh, I forgot to mention, there is a pattern in the book for an elephant that lies pretty flat but is stuffed (presumably for the Circus collection) with some cute appliques on it. The best part of the book for me was the first part showcasing the Bumblebee fabrics and coordinating projects.
Absolutely perfect! My poor family is going to be only seeing me via frequent visits to my art studio. The number of *desirable* patterns in this book is amazing. There isn't one that I don't want to use or accomplish - in many different cord and fabric combos. Starting this weekend (in the middle of winter deep cleaning now - I do mine in spring, fall, and winter.. it makes the whole process easier than having to correct an entire year of item misplacement, floor and furniture build up, editing, etc). By Christmas of next year, my only problem will be separating myself from which I choose to gift and which to keep.BTW; for those saying "the patterns can't be used without destroying the book", that's a total falsehood. Either photocopy them from the book, snap a pic with your phone and print it off, or at use tracing paper. I *never* cut up my books. The only way printing copies of the patterns is illegal is if I were to print the patterns and layouts and sell them. SO flipping cute!!
